My goal has always been to maintain a small studio with a national and international perspective and to work with a diversified core group of clients & projects. I also pursue self-authored projects through the integration of design & technology. These projects are primarily concerned with social and political issues, and involves finding a voice for underrepresented or marginalized people. I also continue to explore new forms of digital and print-based communications as well as pursuing the design and production of digital installations. These ongoing explorations continue to offer both creative challenges while also serving as an encouragement to develop new forms of communication through design. Recently, I have been examining typographic design coupled with the exploration of code and design.

Spring  2020
Worked with Marrisa Watanabe (MFA 2021) to create a fully functioning 2D game in Unity. I definitely see this as something I will become more involved over the coming years, and have signed up for Educational training with Unity for summer 2020. Also worked closely with Kat Brissette to develop a working prototype using extensive design research and investigation into UX/UI which I also see as something critical that  I am incorporating increasingly into my courses. Kat also incorporated Ardunio into her project, which is also something I intend to explore further in the coming semesters.  At the undergraduate level, I have focused more on developing work that is hybrid in nature and has a strong emphasis on creating websites using WordPress. 

Fall  2019
Worked with Rachel Alana Ampley (BFA 2020) to create a functioning interactive kiosk display using the Hype software. Designing for this format is something I want to pursue more in the coming semesters as I believe the possibilities are endless and the ability to tell an interactive narrative is crucial for contemporary designers.  In the Type BFA class, I introduced designing book covers (instead of the previous posters) along with accompanying Instagram versions, which I believe were uniformly successful. 

Spring 2019
Worked with Mia Culbertson (MFA 2020) on creating an installation that used built materials (in wood and ceramics) along with Arduino integration. At the undergraduate level, I continued to modify the portfolio course, in cooperation with the portfolio faculty, as the portfolio class is a constantly evolving course. 

Fall 2018
Worked with Madison Cichewicz (BFA 2019) and Sarah Trafford (BFA 2019) to create an interactive presentation for iPad delivery using technology that enabled the use of tap, shake, tilt, and audio to deliver interactive content for children in a digital context. 

Spring 2018
Worked with Yang Shan Chou designing and developing the first fully functioning AR game app in the Graduate seminar class in GAID, using Apple XCode. The app YangShan designed was geared toward children learning basic geometry in 3D space. Also worked Jenny Kowalski to design and develop the first fully functioning game (using Unity) in GAID, to create a game based on the shopping experience in IKEA. This was my first time exploring both Unity and XCode and I hope to continue this exploration in upcoming graduate-level courses. 

Spring 2017
Introduced teaching Processing (programming language) to my Graduate Seminar class. Worked closely with 2 graduates to create a working prototype for an online installation using both Processing and p5.js (an accompanying programming language that enables Processing to work in an online delivery) that will be completed in Spring 2018. Using my previous experience with Processing, I was excited by the challenge of incorporating this technology into an actual student project. I also got to use, for the first time, some Augmented Reality technology into this class, in the form of augmented photographs in a printed catalog.

Fall 2016
Introduced teaching Adobe XD, Invision, and WordPress software into my Senior Graphic Design: Special Topics class, for the successful creation of mobile app prototypes, as well as creating fully functioning WordPress websites using its Content Management Software (CMS).

Spring 2016
I began teaching some new software, with the intention of moving more into the realm of prototyping. In this way, students can concentrate on designing, and not worry about the development side of production, which in the design field, is carried out (for the most part) by seasoned developers. In Advanced Graphic Design, Spring 2016, I worked with students, using the prototyping tool InVision to create working iPhone Apps. This was my first time having the students create mobile prototypes and it was quite successful. One student, Brandon Wherley (BFA 2016) won an award with his “COO” App design in Applied Arts Magazine, Summer 2016. Going forward, this may mark somewhat of a turning point for me in terms of moving towards prototyping, versus the creation of “working” projects, such as Apps and websites. I also used this technology in both my Portfolio class and my Independent Study class, Spring 2016, along with using Mag+ for iPad App development in both classes.

Spring 2015
In Senior Graphic Design: Authorship/Thesis, allowed two sets of teams to work on collaborative, joint projects. Both projects were geared toward the creation of actual product designs, that could, in theory, be brought to market. Also encouraged the integration of Muse with InDesign DPS and also taught Adobe Premiere and Adobe Speedgate for video creation, editing, and production.

Fall 2014
In Special Topics class, I worked with students to create my first complete multi-purpose online project, that fully integrated web design, social media, and video production, using Muse, After Effects, Adobe Premiere, along with Facebook and Twitter integration.  

Spring 2014
Added the design and production of mobile design and technology to the Advanced Type class, using the fieldtestapp technology. This project was added in conjunction with the student’s final brochure project and was introduced to give students the opportunity to extend their catalog design for a mobile, hybrid environment. In Portfolio class, included the design and technology for mobile devices and also introduced the use of Adobe Muse to create websites by the students, which allows students to create immersive websites without extensive coding.

Fall 2013 & Spring 2014
In both sections of Special Topics included the design and technology for mobile devices and also introduced the use of Adobe Muse to create websites by the students that did not require the use of extensive coding.

Working alongside Scott Laserrow, Kelly Holohan, and Paul Sheriff, developed a new Senior portfolio curriculum (Spring 2013) which involved moving from a purely print-based portfolio to a more extensive digital portfolio using InDesign and its DPS to create an interactive iPad app for student presentation.

Further developed my Senior Graphic Design Class: Hybrid Design class to allow for students to create the following: a) an all print project, b) a hybrid project, or b) an all interactive project; all of which were multiple component projects. Also developed a system to allow students to develop detailed schedules to create their varied projects and components. Extensive use of InDesign’s DPS, Adobe After Effects and also used, for the first time, mobile design technology in the form of http://fieldtestapp.com/

The chair serves as the academic leader of the department and is responsible for initiating and overseeing the recruitment and mentoring of faculty and graduate students, as well as the promotion, tenure, and merit processes applicable to all faculty in the department. The chair also oversees curriculum planning as well as periodic program reviews and accreditation matters affecting the academic discipline. The chair is responsible for all administrative functions within a department including fiscal oversight, coordinating a department’s research and clinical activity, managing adjunct faculty and non-faculty staff, procurement of goods and services for the department, and assigning research and classroom space for all departmental faculty. In carrying out my various duties, I consult regularly with my program head, Professor Kelly Holohan, and the department faculty as needed, but in general, I strive to be as open as I can be with my core faculty to ensure the efficient operation of the department. One critical component of being a Department Chair is the evaluation of full-time departmental faculty for tenure and promotion. This includes consulting with the dean regarding the third-year evaluation of tenure-track faculty and making formal, independent recommendations to the dean on all departmental tenure and promotion applications and communicating those recommendations to the various stakeholders in the process. During my tenure as Department Chair, I have helped guide the successful application to Full Professor for Kelly Holohan and Byron Wolfe, and to a successful application for tenure for Amze Emmons.

Served on the Education Committee for the AIGA Philadelphia Chapter. Various meetings during both the Fall and Spring Semester 2014 -2015. Worked on the organization for the following three projects over the time-period: 

A) Feedback 17 (http://philadelphia.aiga.org/event/feedback-17/) portfolio event, which was held in May 2015. Worked with the committee to produce the event, and was also one of the portfolio reviewers for the event. 

B) Also worked on the development and production, and hanging and dismantling of the exhibition: the Design For Good Exhibition, which was held on February 12th, 2015. In this exhibition, students brought attention to a non-profit organization of their choice that serves the greater Philadelphia region by designing a t-shirt for that organization. The exhibition was held in the IceBox, Philadelphia. And lastly,

C) Open Studios event with Here’s My Chance studio, 1227 N 4th St, Philadelphia, on November 5th, 2014. Helped organize the event and acted as a chaperone for the visiting students to the studio.  

Organized Interact 12, the annual show of juried interactive design and animation and was hosted at Tyler on October 10th, 2014, in conjunction with Design Philadelphia Week 2014. This year’s judges were Jelyn Frye (BFA 12), Eric Sutton (BFA 2001), Gavin Cooper (MFA 2005). Also organized special guest Chris Cobb, Creative Director of Second Story, (New York Office) who gave a wonderful presentation, as well as being a judge for the Best of Show. This was easily the best turnout so far for Interact, with standing room only in room B04. The event was also mentioned in the technically Philly blog. Served as faculty advisor for MFA Metals & CAD-CAM candidate Bryan Kekst Brown (MFA 16).

Served as faculty advisor on the following MFA GAID candidates: Zan Barnett (MFA 15), Courtney Brown (MFA 16), Nicole Eastman (MFA 15), Katie Savage (MFA 16), Joshua Schott (MFA 15), Karen Watkins (MFA 16), Stephanie Werning (MFA 15).

Developed four classes during the Spring Semester 2014 for continuing education to be taught during summer 2014. Organized adjuncts teachers, Brian Cassidy, Reed Gustow, Mario Zucca & Matt Gordilis, to teach courses in  Digital Animation, An Introduction to WordPress, The Business of Illustration, and Introduction to HTML & CSS classes. Worked with each instructor to create the various syllabi, as well as help organize their classroom facilities. Promoted the classes through social media as well as creating an on-air radio spot (with WRTI) to help promote the classes. Unfortunately, due to low-enrollment and various other marketing factors, none of these classes ran. However, in the future, it is hoped that some portion of these classes may be offered under a different umbrella in the near future at Tyler.

Served on the search committee for the tenure-track assistant professor position in the Foundations Department during the Spring Semester 2014. Initial search involved reviewing in excess of 120 online portfolios, 10 online interviews at various times, and 4 in-house, in-person interviews at Tyler, with studio visits and presentations.

As chair of Gerard Brown’s promotion committee, I worked through the Spring 2014 semester gathering and soliciting reviewers for Gerard’s review. Worked with Gerard on his tenure package and worked with his office to send out the tenure packages to the various reviewers at the beginning of the summer. However, after coming back teaching in Rome, we had to modify our reviewer’s search per the Provosts revised reviewer requirements, and entailed a further search for reviewers and mailing out a second round of tenure packets over the summer.

Chaired the leaves and awards committee in Fall 2013. Reviewed all proposals, gathered and assembled the reviews by the various committee members, and completed a written report outlining and grading the various proposals for submission to the Provost Office in November 2013.

Served on the Education Committee for the AIGA Philadelphia Chapter. Various meetings during both the Fall and Spring Semester 2013 -2014. Worked mainly on the organization of the Feedback 16 portfolio event, which was held in May 2014. Worked with the committee to produce the event, and was primarily responsible for a new component to the event called “Show & Tell” which allowed the various students to show their work directly to other students, which turned out to be a very successful new component to the event.

Served on the Tyler exhibition committee Fall 2013 and Spring 2014, and consequently spent many hours writing correspondence back and forth between the committee and the GAID program (after the final committee meeting in May 2014) revolving around the many concerns within the program about the new exhibitions proposal. Eventually reaching a compromise during the summer break.

Worked alongside Gerard Brown and the Foundations Department to assist in inviting Stefan Sagmeister to speak at Tyler School of Art & Architecture & Architecture, Spring 2013. Facilitated discussions between Tyler School of Art & Architecture & Architecture and Sagmeister’s Studio and also presented Stefan to the audience of over 200+ students, main campus, Spring 2013.

Invited to complete an extensive program evaluation review for the Graphic Design Program at Mount Washusett Community College in Gardner, Massachusetts, Spring 2013. The evaluation consisted of a two-day on-site program review in Gardner. The visit included interviews with members of the administration, full-time and adjunct faculty members, current students enrolled in the design program, graphic design alumni as well as several in-class observations, conducted over a two day period followed by a discussion held with alumni from MWCC. Working closely with Leslie Cullen, Chair of the Computer Graphic Design Program, I wrote a 20 page (5000 words) document outlining their current strengths within the program and went on to describe possible solutions to improve and restructure their program over the next two years. MWCC was extremely pleased with the evaluation and plan on implementing many of the recommendations over the coming semesters.

Worked with Alice Drueding, Tony Profeta, and Terry Putcher to create a Continuing Education course “HTML, CSS & Responsive Web Design” which ran in Summer 2013. Also worked directly with Tony Profeta to develop a syllabus to teach responsive web design to alumni.

Organized the Interact 11 show and presentation which was held in May 2013, Tyler Rm B04. Organized judges (4), submissions from current students (over 100 submissions) and presented the winning entries at the annual event in Tyler, to an audience of roughly 80 people.
