For many years, Tyler School of Art & Architecture, Temple University hosted an annual juried show called Interact. Interactive designers from around the country acted as guest judges each year. The popular event showcased both web design and animation from design students enrolled in Tyler. Each year, the brief was to design a poster around the number of that particular year. In this version, we focused on the number 5 both in the typography and in the photography. Patricia found a set of metal hand glove models, possibly dating from the 1930s, and began photographing them in the studio. Incidentally, at this time, I had also been reading about Charles Demuth, and discovered his painting “I saw the figure 5 in Gold” from 1928, which became another source of inspiration for this poster. Combining photography and typography in this manner yielded an almost constructivist interpretation and the motion and dynamism of its composition is something that has appealed to our studio practice over the years.
