This is the second poster I designed for Tyler School of Art’s annual summer design workshop at Temple University Japan Campus, Tokyo & Kyoto. This promotional poster helped raise awareness about this exciting summer program in Japan. Students from around the country immersed themselves in the culture of Japan and produced designs for print and interactive mediums in this intensive six-week course. The layout of this poster with its combination of photography and illustration was definitely inspired by a retrospective exhibition of the work of Ikko Tanaka that I was fortunate to see while I teaching a summer course in Tokyo. Being able to combine Patricia McElroy’s photography with my illustration also made this poster an enjoyable collaboration. Balance, duality, and contrast, all these elements were so obvious when viewing Tanaka’s work first-hand and I wanted to pay homage to that aesthetic and bring a piece of that contemplative design to my students at Tyler.
